Hind Limb Paresis Home Program
This home program was created by Dr. Erica Kirsch with Head2Tail Mobility. This is intended as a general home program for dogs with hind limb paresis. These exercises should not be started without a recommendation from your veterinarian. This is not intended to be a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Never force any of these exercises or treatments. If your dog seems painful with them or doesn’t like them, then STOP and consult with your veterinarian. Vibrate Hind Limbs
Using something that vibrates (electric toothbrush, facial massager, etc) vibrate up and down the back legs including over and under the paws. Perform for 2 minutes, 5 times a day.
2. Toe Pinches
With your dog lying on their side, pinch the webbing between their toes with their leg extended. You can pinch between any 2 toes. Pinch until they pull the leg away from you. When you pinch use a pinch, pill-roll, and pull away motion. Repeat 20 reps each side, 5 times day.
3. Bicycling Hind Leg
Have your dog lie on their side. Hold one knee and one hand at the ankle. Gentle push the leg forward, then down, then back, then tuck the leg back up towards the body. The leg should move in a full bicycle motion. Repeat 10 times twice a day.
4. Hold a Sit or Sternal Position
Place your dog into a normal sit or sternal position with their back legs tucked neatly at their hips. In this position perform gentle weight shifts side to side and bounces at the hips. Hold for 2 minutes, 5 times a day.
